Description

As many married couples can attest, learning to communicate with your spouse can be one of the greatest challenges of a marriage. Despite best intentions and honest caring on both sides, couples can sometimes end up feeling disconnected from each other, and uncertain how to improve their unhappy situation.

In The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate, Dr. Gary Chapman offers couples in this situation a valuable tool in relating to one another. Drawing from over thirty years of experience as a marriage counselor, Dr. Chapman has identified five love languagesfive ways that people communicate and understand emotional love. These ways of expressing and receiving love can be as different as Chinese from English. If you express your love in "English" when your mate only speaks "Chinese," you both will surely end up dissatisfied and confused. Your spouse will never "hear"and more importantly, never feelyour love in the way you intend to show it.

As all couples eventually learn, euphoric feelings of being "in love" aren't enough to sustain a marriage over the years. In the same way, Dr. Chapman explains, feeling love for our spouse is not enough. We must learn to communicate love in a way our spouse can understand, using some variation of the five love languages: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch. Dr. Chapman offers a thorough explanation of what each love language means and how people use it to communicate affection and commitment, all illustrated with real-life examples from his counseling practice. Throughout this book, readers will also find assessment tools to help determine the primary love language of their spouse, and to identify their own!
